Ted Bundy's Love and Marriage. A Serial Killers Charade
Her family comprised of her daughter, Molly and her boyfriend, Ted. Little did she know about the activities of her charming boyfriend, who would often wander out of the house after dinner to 'study in the library'.
Who is Ted Bundy?
Theodore Robert Bundy, the most glorified serial killer, was one of the most notorious criminals active in the 1970's. He put on a mask of being a responsible boyfriend and step-father which was soon uncovered by the Police as well as his own girlfriend, Elizabeth.
Ted Bundy was known for the murder and rape of at least 28 women between 1974 and 1978 although the real number of crimes remain uncertain. This period of time was known as the 'Golden age of Serial Killers' due to the various serial killers actively hunting for their victims.
Bundy had a unique approach towards his victims. He would wear a cast in his hand, pretend to be injured and ask young women to help him with something in his car. Since he was a handsome man who was friendly, the women would not think of anything amiss until they sat in his car.
In his infamous 1968 Volkswagon Beetle, he would often knock the women down with a crowbar and commit violent sexual activities. Their maimed bodies were dumped in the woods where he would further mutilate them and indulge in necrophilia.
At times he would revisit the sites for further pleasure. A few reports mentioned that he would steal personal belongings from his victims to keep them as souvenirs. These included different body parts and photographs of the dead victim.
Why Was Ted Bundy Famous?
Ted Bundy did not confess to any of his crimes until a day before his execution. He maintained his innocence and tried to convince Elizabeth that he did not commit the crimes. However, she could definitely join the dots since she was a proof that Bundy would not be home on the nights of the murders.
While Elizabeth was on cross roads after suspecting her lover to be a murderer, Bundy had developed quite a good reputation in court. The court room would be filled with smitten women who refused to believe that he could commit any crime.
A few were in favor of his prison escapes and some even said that they would marry him. He was romanticized by the media who aired live interviews which made him appear like a normal man. It was only during the Ted Bundy confession tapes that the people saw the real sociopath.
Bundy had this way with words and since he already had the support of a lot of women, he grew confident about the trial. Questioning his lawyers competency, he decided to be his own lawyer. His law and psychology degree was put to best use but to no avail.
The sadistic serial killer appeared to love the attention he was receiving from the media. He enjoyed it enough, to romanticize it further more by confessing his love for Carole Ann Boone and marrying her in the courtroom.
What Happened To Carole Ann Boone?
Ted Bundy met his wife, Boone at the Washington State Department of Emergency Services where Ted was helping in the search of the missing victims that he had murdered. The two hit it off immediately but began their relationship during his trial.
Boone would visit Bundy in prison and in 1981, she gave birth to their daughter, Rose Bundy. Ted was yet on death row but he spent as much time as he could with his daughter. However, in 1986 they divorced each other when Boone came to realize that Bundy was not innocent.
She divorced the serial killer and moved back to Washington. Little has been known about her whereabouts since then. Some believe that she moved to Oklahoma and changed her name to Abigail Griffin, while others believe she remarried and lived a happy life.
Carole Ann Boone died in a retirement home in 2018. Rose Bundy has remained away from the public eye. Some believe she has changed her name and has three children who are kept away from the criminal history of their biological father.
Where Is Elizabeth Kendall Now?
During Bundy's trial, Elizabeth faced her worst nightmare by convicting the man she loved. She held herself guilty for many years and wondered how she was not a victim of the crimes. After long years of addiction, Elizabeth is now 74 years old and living in Washington with her daughter, Molly.
In 1981, she published a book called The Phantom Prince: My Life With Ted Bundy. She had since then been away from the media and not given any interviews. She wished to remain anonymous for the sake of her mental being and daughter.
Decades after the execution of the ruthless serial killer, Elizabeth agreed to share her story which is highlighted in Amazon Primes documentary, Ted Bundy: Falling for a killer. Elizabeth and Molly share insights about their family life with a man who they thought they knew.
Ted Bundy Execution
Theodore Robert Bundy was sentenced to death in January 1980 for several murders. However, he chose to confess his crimes in order to buy himself more time. He was finally made to face the electric chair on January 24, 1989.
During his last few days, he tried to call Elizabeth and Boone, but they did not answer their telephones. He even wrote a last letter to Elizabeth, which was found by Molly, who did not inform her mother about the same so that they could move on with their lives.
Ted Bundy's last words were, "I would like to give my love to my family and friends", but did the serial killer really have any at this particular time? He was declared dead while the state of Florida rejoiced for justice had been served.
After the execution, a few medical examiners decided to study Bundy's brain to understand his violent criminal activities. The study prevails till this day and the answers remain uncertain.
Ted Bundy: A Genius With Wrong Decisions
After the death sentence was announced, the Judge told Bundy that he would have made an excellent lawyer but sadly Bundy chose the wrong profession that can only cause harm to himself and others.
Bundy had an IQ of 136 and was a smart individual. He had his way with words and women, which he could have used to his best but unfortunately he took the dark road. He was not only an excellent law student, but also tried his hand at politics which seemed to interest him since he was passionate about it..
He was glorified for all the wrong reasons by the media in the 20th century and the media in the 21st century as well. While it is important to be aware about the existence of this unsparing criminal, it is even more essential to carry the lesson he teaches. You are one choice away from changing your life, for the better, or the worse.
However, the dilemma yet prevails. Are all criminals born or made in society?
